Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

What is EFT?

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a warm, evidence-based approach grounded in the science of emotion and attachment — our deep human need for safe, secure connection. It helps you understand the emotions underneath your struggles, make sense of recurring patterns, and create new, more secure ways of relating to yourself and the people who matter to you.

EFT works both one-on-one and with couples:

  • For individuals — EFT helps with anxiety, depression, trauma, and the attachment wounds that shape how we feel and relate (its individual application is also known as EFIT).

  • For couples — EFT helps partners break out of negative cycles, reconnect, and rebuild trust and closeness.

At Collaborative Therapy, several of our Mississauga therapists work with EFT in individual and couples sessions.

How EFT Works

EFT gently helps you move from feeling stuck to feeling connected, by:

  • Slowing down to notice the emotions beneath reactions and conflict

  • Understanding the attachment needs those emotions are pointing to

  • Making sense of the patterns or cycles that keep you (or you and a partner) stuck

  • Creating new emotional experiences that build security, trust, and self-compassion

EFT for Individuals

In individual therapy, EFT helps you turn toward difficult emotions with support rather than avoiding them — which is often where lasting change begins. It's especially helpful for anxiety, depression, low self-worth, and the effects of complex or childhood trauma, including for people who don't necessarily think of their experiences as "trauma."

EFT for Couples

For couples, EFT is one of the most well-researched approaches for strengthening relationships. It helps partners step out of the cycle of conflict or distance, hear each other's deeper needs, and rebuild a sense of safety and closeness. Learn more on our Couples Therapy page.
