Meet Ivona, our founder

Ivona Szostak, RP — founder of Collaborative Therapy

I came to this work the long way around. Over two decades in Ontario classrooms taught me that almost everyone is carrying something. Anxiety, depression, the quiet weight of childhood experiences they’ve never named as trauma. Most of the people I sat across from weren’t broken; they were doing their best with patterns that once kept them safe and were no longer serving them.

I recognized those patterns in part because I’d walked a version of them myself. I lost my father to cancer. I’ve done my own work around mental health. I raised my child as a single mother. None of that makes me a better therapist than the years of training do — but it does mean that when a client tells me they’re tired, ashamed, or barely holding things together, I know that ground from both sides.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist with CRPO. I hold a master’s in Counselling Psychology and a master’s in Education, graduating top of my class in both. I started Collaborative Therapy because I wanted a clinic where people could come as they are — tired, uncertain, midway through whatever they’re trying to figure out — without having to perform their way through it.

The therapists I work with share that philosophy. We match modality to person, not the other way around. We see children, teens, and adults — as individuals, couples, and families. We offer evening, weekend, and daytime hours, in person at our Square One Mississauga office or online across Ontario. Sessions are available in English, Polish, and Hindi, and sliding-scale fees are available when cost is a barrier.

If you’re not sure whether you’re “supposed” to be in therapy, you probably are. Most of the people I work with arrived feeling exactly that way.
